Charles (Charlie) Gilmore Dennison was born on May 23, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA. Charlie received a B.A. in English from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. in 1967. He received a B.D. from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA in 1971, and he was ordained as a teaching elder in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) on May 9, 1972 in the Presbytery of New Jersey. He served as pastor of Fairfield Church (Independent) in Fairton, NJ from 1972-1976 before moving on to Grace OPC in Sewickley, PA from 1976 until his death on April 29, 1999. While pastoring at Grace OPC, he became the OPC historian from 1981-1999, and he also received a Masters of Arts (New Testament) from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
It was during his seminary years that Charlie began to see the genius of Geerhardus Vos and his work with the integrity of the biblical text. Assisted by the writings of Herman Ridderbos and the mentorship of Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., he came to understand that Cornelius Van Til’s starting point for Christian apologetics (no compromise with the self-attesting Christ of Scripture) has a consistent outworking in what Vos/Ridderbos/Gaffin were teaching about the biblical revelation. As Charlie went into the pulpit, the church received rich and thoughtful biblical exegesis that was focused upon Christ and the treasures of orthodox and Reformed Christianity in a creative, stimulating, and fresh manner. His deep reverence for the triune God of Scriptures was brought to bear upon the biblical text, and this profound respect was injected into his unique scholarship concerning the history of church as well as the culture addressing the church each day. Like a novel, most of his sermons are a rich literary narrative that demands the listener’s attention until everything comes together at the end. As you listen to his sermons, you will learn quickly that he had a wonderful knowledge of literature and the arts that were blended often into his message with clear appropriateness to the implications of the biblical text.
Perhaps, Charlie’s innovative exegetical sermons can still serve the body of Christ today. Many thanks to Ginger, his wife for 27 years, for giving permission to post Charlie’s sermons. We hope you will listen and be enriched in your walk in Christ.
